Tura, Jan 31: In a major success, West Garo Hills (WGH) police arrested four criminals, including the kingpin in a sustained operation, while also recovering 17 stolen bikes, in a major operation this afternoon, Jan 32.
A weeklong drive against bike-lifters was led by CI (Sadar), West Garo Hills, and Officer in-Charge, Tura PS, in the district. The operation was a coordinated one with police counterparts in Assam also chipping in to nab the group that had been wreaking havoc on the local population with their activities.
WGH police arrested the prime accused, Jamesmond K Marak, alias Simon (32), of Balsrigittim, Raja Apal, in North Garo Hills, along with three others namely, Tengwal R Marak (28) of Jamge, Songsak, East Garo Hills (EGH), Jangkal B Marak (31) of Rongchek Apal, Songsak, EGH and Judistil T Sangma (33) of Dosikgittim, Mangsang, Rongjeng, EGH.
Those arrested had a history of similar crimes and were arrested earlier as well. However, after securing bail, they resumed their illegal activities. “Investigations have revealed that the stolen bikes were being transported and sold through a well-organised network. We were actively working to dismantle this network and recover more stolen vehicles from various parts of the district and other states,” said district police chief, Abraham T Sangma.
WGH police further asked residents to be more vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to vehicle/two-wheeler theft to the police.
