JOWAI, Feb 1: Independent candidate from North Jowai Constituency, Khroo Lamsanki Pariat, on Saturday said his decision to contest the upcoming elections to the autonomous district council (ADC) elections is driven by his deep belief in and commitment to the principles of the Sixth Schedule, guaranteed through the Indian Constitution.
After filing his nomination at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Jowai for the upcoming election, Pariat remarked, “The Sixth Schedule, which is empowered within the district council, aims to protect and restore the traditions, customs, ethnicity, land and livelihood of the indigenous people. As a candidate, I have taken this initiative to restore the district council, which serves as the cornerstone of our community. Till now, the Council has not been able to create laws to protect the land and the people from outside threats, such as the rivers within the Council’s jurisdiction, including the Wah Myntdu, Wah Myntang, Wah Kupli and Wah Mynngot, which have started to be affected by damage.”
The independent candidate also flagged concerns about the declining local markets due to the entry of large, non-indigenous companies, which he fears could undermine the livelihoods of local traders.
He then went on to point out that even JHADC employees are now forced to take loans to meet their personal needs, highlighting the financial instability within the system.
Confident in his chances, Pariat stated that he has received strong support from women and young people who are eager for change.
Meanwhile, the independent candidate urged the voters in North Jowai to participate actively in the election and make informed choices in selecting an MDC who, he added, can bring meaningful change.
He also called on them to evaluate his past work and dedication, adding that he is committed to addressing the growing issue of substance abuse among the youths.
