Two GNLA militants killed in encounter

Goalpara (Assam): Two suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants were on Sunday killed in an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district of Assam, police said.

Two motorcycle-borne youths fired at patrolling Army personnel after they were asked to stop by the security forces at Borjhora village. In the ensuing encounter the militants were killed. The security forces recovered three pistols, 12 rounds of live ammunition, a satellite phone, a motorcycle and some documents. The bodies have been sent to Goalpara Civil Hospital for post mortem, police said.

GNLA over ground worker killed

An over ground worker of the banned outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed in an encounter at Chokpot region of South Garo Hills. The slain cadre has been identified as Kraibing Sangma. The over ground worker was killed when a team of South Garo Hills police was conducting counter insurgency operations in Chokpot region. On reaching Mitapgre village, 15 kms from Chokpot, the police team learnt that GNLA second in command of Chokpot, Skylance, was present with cadres and over ground workers in the house of a villager identified as Nangjang M Sangma.

However, a sentry on duty spotted the police team and opened fire leading to an encounter that lasted 20 minutes during which the GNLA men fled the scene.

Police recovered a 7.65 pistol, live ammunition of 7.62 pistols, empty AK ammo shells, 2 air guns and 5 cell phones.

The area commander Jangjang was not present in the village at the time of the encounter. (With inputs from PTI)
