SHILLONG, Feb 9: The United Democratic Party, a constituent of the National People’s Party-led MDA 2.0 coalition, has decided to seek clarity from its coalition partners on numerous reports of illegal mining and transportation of coal in the state.
“These are allegations but on the whole, the matter needs crystal clear discussion,” Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh said on Sunday.
Reports of illegal coal mining and transportation continue to surface with a Meghalaya High Court-appointed committee headed by Justice (retired) BP Katakey finding evidence of such activities in South Garo Hills.
Lyngdoh, who is also the MDA spokesperson said: “We will certainly take up this matter with our partners in the coalition and also as the MDA because a lot of things being reported are unclear to us and we will seek that clarity.”
Earlier, Justice Katakey said inquiries into all seven complaints made in connection with illegal coal trade are in progress. Notices were issued to all the individuals concerned but one of them failed to appear before the committee although the hearing was scheduled in Guwahati for that person’s convenience.
He emphasised the need for transparency in the investigation process, stating that complainants must be given a fair opportunity to present their grievances.
The committee is scheduled to visit Shillong after the ADC elections to further review the situation and examine additional reports related to illegal coal mining in the state.
The issue of illegal coal mining has remained a contentious topic in Meghalaya, with activists and local communities continuously raising concerns over environmental degradation and alleged violations of the mining ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
