Local entrepreneur aims at chilli revolution

NONGPOH: A young entrepreneur Sherrad Wahlang who recently returned to the State after completing his studies abroad has set a good example for many of the youth to take up agricultural farming as a career option.
Wahlang (23) who completed his studies on Business Management from James Cook University in Singapore has started his own agricultural farm at Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi district with the noble intention of developing the agriculture sector in the State especially in the field of growing various species of chillies.
While pursuing his studies in Singapore, he has managed to learn many new techniques and equipments for growing of various species of chillies.
The unique aspect about the concept develop by this young entrepreneur of growing chillies is that he brought in various kind of species from outside to grow in the State like Scorpion Morouga from Trinidad and other species of chillies from California.
The other species of chillies which is grown in the farm are King of the North, Sweet Crimson Pepper, Corno Del Toro, u Yellow Morouga, Peter Pepper Rainbow, Mini Bell Pepper blend and Cunanelle pepper. While speaking to newsmen during the visit to the farm on Wednesday, Wahlang said that the intention behind starting the farm was his desire to let the people of the State taste various species of chillies which is grown across the globe.
“Personally, I always like to take various green vegetables and salads. During my studies abroad, I use to see people like to taste various kinds of foods. But there is not much variety among the foods which are taken by our people. I want to bring a change in the food habits of our people,” the young entrepreneur said.
He also informed that he has sought help from the ICAR and also from the District Horticulture department to provide him with some inputs relating to the production of chillies.
