SHILLONG, Feb 12: Umiam Lake, one of the most pristine lakes in Meghalaya, has long been a major attraction for tourists. However, this natural asset continues to suffer from pollution caused by irresponsible individuals who show little regard for preserving the man-made lake.
Ever since the Meghalaya government restricted the movement of heavy vehicles across the Umiam Dam, night super buses have been operating from a lay-bye near the lake. With no designated terminal, these buses are forced to use the lay-bye, leading to increased foot traffic in the area. Unfortunately, many people who gather on the opposite side of the lay-bye have been seen carelessly discarding waste, which eventually finds its way into the lake.
Opposite the lay-by, there is a parking area where passengers wait to board their buses. However, some individuals have set up temporary shops near the lake, and litter, including cups and food packets, is often discarded irresponsibly. If not cleared in time, this waste flows directly into Umiam Lake, further degrading its condition.
While some visitors appreciate the spot for its scenic lake view, the area is gradually being turned into an informal market, raising concerns about its environmental impact.
Additionally, reports suggest that local boys are charging a parking fee of Rs 10-20 per vehicle, even for brief stops. They provide receipts only when explicitly asked, and it remains unclear on whose authority this toll is being collected.
The growing pollution and unregulated activities around Umiam Lake highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and proper waste management to protect this iconic destination.
