SHILLONG, Feb 20: The Meghalaya government intends to invest a massive amount of Rs 4,000 crore to develop tourism infrastructure including construction of high-end accommodations in popular tourist spots like Sohra and Umiam over the next two years.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday revealed that the funds would primarily be utilized for the creation of infrastructure in major tourist destinations, including Umiam, Sohra, Dawki, New Shillong Township, and even Garo Hills.
According to Lyngdoh, the Rs 4,000-crore investment will be sourced from the Ministry of Tourism and the state government under a 90:10 funding pattern, besides external funding.
Lyngdoh stated that the government would require approximately two years to complete these large-scale projects to give a major boost to the tourism sector.
He asserted that this substantial investment would be a game-changer for Meghalaya’s tourism industry.
Citing an example, he highlighted Dawki as one of the most visited tourist spots and a crucial export hub that currently lacks proper accommodation facilities.
“With the development of high-end facilities, we expect tourists to stay longer and spend more time in the area,” Lyngdoh noted.
He further emphasized that the upcoming four-lane road from Umiam to Panchgram in Assam will enhance Meghalaya’s potential as both a trade station and a prime tourism destination.
The government remains committed to making Meghalaya a world-class tourist destination with top-tier infrastructure and improved facilities, Lyngdoh added.
