Five bike lifters in police net after coordinated ops

SHILLONG, Feb 24: Five bike lifters have been arrested by the Meghalaya Police in a well-coordinated effort.
Police said that after pursuing a bike theft gang for the past few weeks, an operation led by Sohra PS and Special Cell East Khasi Hills led to the arrest of two bike thieves — Babu Marak (19) of Dalia Shella, East Khasi Hills, and Sunday N Sangma (30) of Samanda bock in East Garo Hills.
They were intercepted on Sunday evening at Sohra Rim on a Suzuki Gixxer bike (ML 05 AD 4393), stolen from Smit, to be sold to receivers from Bangladesh.
According to the police, they had received the bike in Mawkdok from another group who are involved in lifting bikes from the city.
In a follow-up operation, three more persons who stole the bike and are involved in umpteen number of bike theft cases, were arrested in 7th Mile with a scooty. They were identified as Barabor Namsaw (28) of Jirang, Patharkhmah, Banroilang Iawrod (19) of Mawsynram and Declin Warjri (20) of Nongmensong, Shillong.
While continuing with the checking at Sohra, police encountered another bike, which was stolen from Mawiong Umjapung.
The rider and the pillion abandoned the bike and escaped after stopping before the checking at Nongsawlia.
