JOWAI, Feb 27: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Jaintia Hills has strongly opposed any plans by the central and state governments to establish a railway line in East Jaintia Hills, stating that they will not allow any project that affects the Hynniewtrep homeland.
In a statement, the organisation reiterated its long-standing stance against the railway project unless the government provides clear legal safeguards to protect the Hynniewtrep land. The HNYF warned that if the government proceeds without consultation or consent, they will take all necessary steps to protect their land.
“We have always opposed this plan unless the government ensures a legal framework to safeguard our land. If the authorities attempt to forcefully impose the project, we will not hesitate to resist, even if it affects any part of the Hynniewtrep region,” the statement read.
The HNYF also questioned the government’s priorities and intentions, pointing out that the existing road infrastructure in the region remains poorly maintained. They asserted that before considering a railway project, the government must first implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and establish a clear boundary between Meghalaya and Assam.
Responding to a recent statement by Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla, who claimed that outsiders cannot own land in East Jaintia Hills, the HNYF criticised his remarks, suggesting that his authority should be limited to East Jaintia Hills alone.
With tensions rising over the proposed railway project, the HNYF’s opposition signals potential resistance if the government moves forward without addressing their demands for land protection and regional safeguards.
