SHILLONG, Feb 27: Nongmahir, a small village island of about 100 people on the far side of Umiam Lake, is known for being a prime tourist and picnic destination, but otherwise for its clean political choices and growing eco-tourism potential. Recently, the villagers backed the Voice of the People Party (VPP), rejecting the ‘cash-for-votes’ tactics, common in the region.
A boatman, a young boy of 18, who left school after Class 9, now earns for the family of four, by ferrying tourists from the island to the mainland. Speaking about how he is proud, that they chose clean politics over muscle money, he says he is hopeful they will see a better future soon.
Located around 40 km from Shillong and reached via Kyrdemkulai, Nongmahir is accessible by a short boat ride from the village to an island in Umsning, Ri-Bhoi. Local villagers run the boat service, which is also used to transport essential goods. Because the boats are vital for everyday life, tourists are charged a slightly higher rate for the goods sold in the island.
The place is full of tourists from October until March, said the boatman.
“We always used to vote for the candidate, but this is for the first time we have voted for a party, without even knowing the candidate closely,” another villager added.
On the island, visitors find a simple and natural setting. Bamboo huts serve as picnic spots and overnight shelters, with some huts offering basic cooking facilities and a larger hut built partly over the water available for longer stays. Although mobile connectivity is weak, digital payment options like Google Pay are common, making transactions easier.
Despite the state government having approved Rs 10 crore for tourism development, many basic infrastructure issues remain. The area suffers from an inconsistent water supply in public restrooms, a shortage of life jackets for boat safety, and exposed electrical wiring that needs urgent repair.
Local residents advise visitors to be cautious with parking, as only two official boat points exist, and some locals may provide misleading directions. With a small eatery near the shore offering limited food options, those staying overnight are advised to bring extra supplies.
The VPP recently swept the KHADC election winning in 17 out of 29 MDC constituencies.
