VPP’s Shemborlang Rynjah, Strong Pillar Kharjana elected unopposed; NPP’s Thombor Shiwat elected JHADC CEM again
Shillong, Feb 28: First-time VPP MDCs from Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh Shemborlang Rynjah and Strong Pillar Kharjana from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah were on Friday elected unopposed as the CEM and chairman of the KHADC respectively.
Kharjana declared Syiem as the new CEM of the council as there were no other contenders for the post.
Senior MDC from Sohra Titosstarwell Chyne and VPP woman MDC from Laitumkhrah-Malki Deity H Majaw felicitated Rynjah as he took over as the new CEM.
Speaking after his election, Rynjah said he would be open to constructive suggestions and would lead the council without fear.
He said that the opposition members should play a cooperative role and that the failure and success of the council rests on all elected MDCs.
Earlier in the day, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M Kurbah conducted the elections and formally announced the election of Kharjana to the post of chairman uncontested.
KHADC CEM and senior member of the House Titosstarwell Chyne felicitated Kharjana as he took over as the newly elected chairman.
While congratulating the newly elected chairman, the KHADC CEM designate hopes that the chairman will ensure that the rules of conduct and business of the house are upheld.
Meanwhile, Chyne stated that they expect the chairman to treat the members of the ruling and opposition in a non-partisan manner.
“I have full faith and confidence that you will be able to further uplift the legislative wing in particular and the council as a whole,” Chyne said while congratulating Kharjana.
Chyne emphasized the need to build coordination between the legislative and the council.
In his address to the house, the KHADC chairman-elect exhorted all members to cooperate to improve the council and its functioning.
The MDCs congratulated both leaders and said that they expect the new CEM and the chairman to treat the members of both the ruling and opposition in a non-partisan manner.
It may be mentioned that the VPP secured an absolute majority in the KHADC with 17 MDCs, while the opposition has 12 MDCs comprising five from the UDP, four from the NPP, two Independent MDCs and one from the HSPDP.
Meanwhile, NPP’s Thombor Shiwat has been re-elected as the CEM of the JHADC through secret ballot where he received 17 votes against Congress’ Madonbai Rymbai with only three, on Friday.
