SHILLONG, March 3: Maitshaphrang Tourism Promotion Group (MTPG) Chairman Michael Syiem on Monday called off his one-week sit-in demonstration following an assurance from the state government to address his concerns.
Syiem had initially announced that he would stage the protest from March 3 to oppose the government’s decision to evict MTPG from Lumpongdeng Island at Umiam Lake without providing financial relief.
“I made this decision after my meeting with the government,” Syiem said.
While he refrained from disclosing details of the government’s assurance, he clarified that he had not requested an extension of the lease agreement. “I am happy to vacate the government property,” he added.
Earlier, Syiem had appealed to the government to provide financial relief for the staff who have been managing the boathouse at Lumpongdeng Island for the past 27 years. The government has given him a deadline to vacate the property by March 13.
