SHILLONG, March 3: The Meghalaya Physical Education and Sports Association (MPE&SA) has urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to facilitate recruitment for the posts of Inspector of Physical Training, Physical Education Teacher, and Physical Trainer in schools, colleges, and other government departments.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, MPE&SA members, who have completed their Diplomas, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees from National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) institutions, emphasised their expertise in enhancing students’ physical strength and mental stability to help them navigate the complexities of the modern world.
Highlighting that Physical Education is a recognised academic stream in India, MPE&SA adviser Kyrmenlang Uriah pointed out that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 places special emphasis on sports as an integral part of the curriculum. He stressed that sports grading should be included in student assessments and that Physical Education should be mandated from Grade 3 onwards as part of school education.
He further stated that graduates and postgraduates in Physical Education are not just instructors but also curriculum developers, student progress monitors, and classroom managers. Therefore, government job advertisements for these positions should clearly specify qualifications such as Diploma, B.P.Ed, M.P.Ed, or PhD.
Referring to data from the Education department, he pointed out that the state has over 13,000 elementary schools, 1,600 higher secondary schools, and multiple colleges and universities.
“Therefore, we request your esteemed office to amend service regulations to ensure that only qualified Physical Education degree holders are appointed to vacant positions in educational institutions and government departments. This includes roles such as P.E. Inspectors, P.E. Trainers, and Assistant Professors in institutions like DSEO and DIET,” he stated.
Uriah also urged the government to fill all vacant positions in government schools and higher educational institutions in line with the NEP 2020 guidelines.
“As Meghalaya prepares to host the National Games, it is crucial for the state government to recognise the significance of Physical Education in shaping sportspersons,” he added.
According to him, Physical Education not only benefits the educational system but also helps children develop respect for their bodies and others’, enhances mental and physical well-being, promotes aerobic and anaerobic fitness, boosts self-confidence and self-esteem, and contributes to social, cognitive, and academic development.
