TURA, March 3: Concern has been raised over the alleged influx of non-tribals into South Garo Hills by a new local group from Nongalbibra, South Garo Hills, called ‘GOERA’. The organisation has urged the Superintendent of Police to take steps to check the increasing non-tribal presence in the district.
According to the Garo Omniscience for Ethnic Renaissance and Awakening (GOERA), the entry of non-tribals claiming to be businessmen, whose credentials remain unverified, is growing in the region.
“We have reason to believe that some of these individuals may be involved in illicit activities, including the exploitation of local tribal women. Recent cases of missing persons and reports of local married tribal women being taken away by non-tribal businessmen have prompted us to request your office to conduct a thorough verification of all non-tribal individuals present in the district for a period of two to three months continuously,” the organisation said, in its complaint to the police chief.
As per the organisation, the verification process should include checking of licences, valid documents, and business credentials to ensure they are genuine and not involved in any illegal activities.
“We are concerned that the lack of proper verification and monitoring may contribute to the increasing number of cases involving the exploitation of local tribal women. We believe it is essential to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety and well-being of the local tribal population,” the organisation added in the complaint.
