SHILLONG, March 5: The Meghalaya government is offering infrastructure support and financial incentives to attract IT companies and create thousands of jobs in the state.
To encourage job creation, the government has introduced an incentive programme, offering Rs 3,000 per employee per company for the first 15,000 employees hired. Companies employing at least 10 people will receive direct incentives to support workforce expansion.
The chief minister highlighted that I-Merit, a company operating in the current IT park, employs 300 local professionals working with artificial intelligence to develop predictive models addressing state-specific challenges.
With the expansion of IT infrastructure, the government anticipates generating 6,000-7,000 direct employment opportunities, including jobs for non-technical staff. The new IT park alone is expected to create 3,000 additional jobs in the first seating. “This initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance employment opportunities and attract investment in the IT sector,” Sangma stated. “By providing infrastructure and financial support, we aim to position Meghalaya as a rising hub for technology and innovation.”
It may be noted that the second phase of the Shillong IT Park is likely to be completed by the year-end.
Based on the increased demand by domestic and multinational companies for setting up their offices at the Shillong Technology Park, the state government has started the construction of the IT park phase-II building adjacent to the phase-I building. This will cover a super-built area of about 1.8 lakh square feet.
The phase-II building is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The building will have world-class infrastructure with a capacity of 3000+ seats. In addition, the work for the Tura IT Park has also started.
