NONGPOH, March 5: In a significant development aimed at fostering cooperation between poultry farmers and traders, two key groups — one representing poultry farmers and the other comprising poultry traders — have reached a consensus to work together for the collective benefit of all stakeholders.
This initiative was made possible through the efforts of noted journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Shillong Mail, Kyrmenlang Uriah, who convened a crucial meeting in Umsning on Wednesday. The discussion was attended by Daminot Sylliang, president of the Meghalaya Poultry Farmers and Welfare Association (MPFWA), and Everest Mylliemumlong, president of the Meghalaya Poultry Suppliers and Retailers Association (MPSRA).
During the deliberations, which lasted several hours, members from both groups highlighted the challenges they face in poultry farming and trade. Key concerns raised included the rising cost of poultry feed, the influx of poultry from outside the state, and price fluctuations in local markets, among other issues.
Speaking to the media, representatives of both associations expressed their satisfaction with the meeting’s outcome. Both groups resolved to prioritise the procurement of locally produced poultry before considering imports from outside Meghalaya, ensuring mutual benefits for farmers and traders alike.
It may be noted that local poultry farmers have long lamented the impact of imported poultry on their livelihoods, arguing that the unchecked entry of poultry from other states disrupts local markets. Many farmers struggle to sustain their operations due to the lower prices of imported poultry, which make it difficult for them to cover production costs.
Furthermore, the leaders of both associations urged the state government to establish a regulatory checkpoint to monitor the health and quality of poultry entering Meghalaya. They stressed that such a measure is essential to safeguard public health and ensure the well-being of consumers who rely on poultry products.
