SHILLONG, March 6: In accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCoRS), the state government has announced its road safety target for 2025 including the ambitious goal of a 10% reduction in both road accidents and fatalities compared to the previous year.
In this regard, the Transport department will implement several measures.
Enhanced enforcement will be a key focus, with strict adherence to traffic rules, speed limits, and lane discipline. The crackdown on driving under the influence of alcohol will also be intensified.
The government has also committed to continuous improvements in road infrastructure, including the identification and rectification of accident-prone black spots, the installation of proper signage, and the enhancement of road markings. Public awareness campaigns will be intensified to educate citizens on road safety, responsible driving practices, and the importance of following traffic regulations.
Stricter driver training and licencing procedures will be enforced, with refresher courses introduced for commercial vehicle drivers and a greater emphasis on defensive driving techniques. Additionally, advanced technologies will be deployed for traffic management, including electronic monitoring and automated enforcement of road safety regulations.
Rigorous data analysis will be conducted to monitor accident trends, identify critical areas, and implement targeted interventions.
Quarterly reports on enforcement activities and actions taken under this directive will be submitted to the Transport department and the Commissioner of Transport to ensure accountability and progress toward the set safety goals.
