SHILLONG, March 8: In a significant development, the Department of Forensic Medicine NEIGRIHMS completed a comprehensive four weeks hands-on training on virtual autopsy on Saturday.
Five participants comprising faculty and residents from across the country took part in the training programme which is a first of its kind.
The programme was conducted with the support of the Department of Health Research.
Prof. (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS congratulated the participants in achieving the new skill. He emphasised on bright future of the new modality and encouraged the participants to take the initiative to develop such centres in their respective institutes.
Prof. A J Patowary, Head of Forensic Medicine Department informed that NEIGRIHMS is only the 2nd centre in India to perform a Virtual Autopsy—a CT scan-based non-invasive forensic technique that uses imaging to examine a deceased person.
It is another way of conducting post-mortem examination without dissection of the body. The addition of this new technology is used in determining the cause and manner of death which helps doctors to deliver more precise reports.
The Department of Forensic Medicine NEIGRIHMS will conduct more such training programmes for imparting training on Virtual Autopsy to Forensic Medicine specialists in the country.
