SHILLONG: The Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM) convenor Michael Syiem has asked the State Government to study the relevance of the District Councils in the Meghalaya Community Participation Bill.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, MSM convenor Michael Syiem said, “ If the District Council has no relevance then it should be done away with from the Meghalaya Community Participation Bill.”
He was responding to the proposals submitted to the State Government on the MCPB which has been a burning issue in the state for the past few months.
The NGOs in the state fear that the CPB will bring about a new system of governance which ultimately means “diluting” the traditional powers bestowed upon the headmen, Nokmas and district councils in the state.The MSM also lashed out at the Rangbah Shnongs for openly misusing and violating their powers while addressing public issues.“They (Rangbah Shnongs) are the ones suppressing people for their own interests,” Syiem said while talking to reporters at The Shillong Press Club here on Tuesday.
According to Syiem, the election of the Rangbah Shnongs is “undemocratic” and said that their election should be done by secret ballot.
