SHILLONG, March 22: Helmets for children while riding pillion on two-wheelers have been made mandatory by the Shillong Traffic Police to improve road safety.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem urged parents and guardians ferrying children on two-wheelers to ensure that the child wears a helmet, and failure to comply will result in penalties as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The move came after it was observed that while parents and guardians riding two-wheelers wear helmets, children riding as pillion passengers or standing in front are left without head protection.
“This exposes them to serious risk of injury or fatality in the event of an accident,” the SP said.
