SHILLONG, March 24: Meghalaya’s Double-Decker Root Bridge in Umshiang has joined the list of iconic venues for yoga sessions, marking its place alongside landmarks like the Taj Mahal, Konark Sun Temple, and Red Fort. This session, organised by the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), was held as part of the countdown to International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025.
Set against Meghalaya’s natural landscape, the event brought together yoga practitioners and wellness enthusiasts who performed asanas on the centuries-old bridge, woven from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees. The session highlighted the connection between traditional knowledge and holistic well-being, emphasizing yoga’s role in fostering balance, strength, and harmony with nature.
NEIAH, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, is based in Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.
Participants at the event noted that yoga, much like the Living Root Bridge, symbolises resilience and coexistence.
The event reinforced the idea that yoga is not just a physical exercise but a way of life that can be practiced anywhere, especially in harmony with nature.
