SHILLONG, March 24: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday asserted that NEIGRIHMS should give preference to local nurses from Meghalaya when recruiting for vacant posts at the institute.
“We understand that many local nurses are currently working on a contractual basis. Since NEIGRIHMS is located in Meghalaya, we believe local nurses should be given priority,” KSU Employment Monitoring Cell chairman, Reuben Najiar, told reporters after a meeting the Deputy Director of NEIGRIHMS. Najiar also noted that the state government has been sending nurses from Meghalaya to Japan for employment opportunities. While the KSU does not oppose this initiative, he stressed that the government should also ensure that local nurses are given preference for vacancies at NEIGRIHMS.
Expressing concern over the recent recruitment advertisement, Najiar said the student body was surprised to see that only two out of 150 vacant posts had been reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
He stated that NEIGRIHMS authorities have claimed they are following the roster system mandated by the Centre. “We have been assured that NEIGRIHMS will show us the roster system they are implementing. We will verify whether the institute is strictly adhering to it,” he said.
Najiar further informed that the NEIGRIHMS deputy director claimed ST candidates have been granted an age relaxation up to 30 years as a special exception, even though the Centre’s notification sets the age limit at 27 years.
He added that the KSU has urged NEIGRIHMS to ensure that examination centres for local candidates applying for any recruitment should be located within the state.
