SHILLONG, Mar 25: Shillong, often praised for its cleanliness, presents a stark contrast on Sundays when the city turns into a dumping ground due to the absence of cleaners.
With Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and Shillong Cantonment Board cleaners largely absent, several parts of the city, including Police Bazar, one of the busiest commercial hubs, are littered with garbage strewn everywhere.
Ironically, waste was found piled up beneath a hoarding that reads, “You are entering a zero-litter area”.
The problem is not limited to specific areas. A walk from the DC Office to Police Bazar reveals the extent of the litter problem, as roads and footpaths remain clogged with trash.
While the SMB actively cleans the city on working days, the absence of dustbins forces pedestrians to discard waste on the roads.
Throughout Shillong, hardly any dustbins are visible, raising questions about why authorities haven’t installed them.
The Cantonment areas are no exception, with huge piles of garbage left unattended along the roadsides, further highlighting the need for better waste management on Sundays.
