Workshop on drug use highlights prevention and rehab strategies

SHILLONG, March 29: The St. Edmund’s College Alumni Association (SECAA), in collaboration with the Department of Social Work (PG) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) of St. Edmund’s College, organised a ‘Consultancy Workshop on Drug Use in Meghalaya: Prevention, Detection, and Rehabilitation’ on Friday at the college premises.
According to a statement here, the workshop was part of a research project sponsored by the Office of the Director of Police, Meghalaya, aiming to present preliminary findings on the growing concern of drug use in the state.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including recovery users, members of the Meghalaya User Forum, government officials, healthcare professionals, law enforcers, community leaders, religious leaders, parents and representatives of Drug Treatment Facilities.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID), MGR Kumar, who attended the event as the chief guest, accentuated the need for a collaborative approach to address drug-related issues in Meghalaya.
The workshop focused on sharing research findings to provide a data-informed perspective on the state’s drug use problem.
During the consultancy workshop, discussions revolved around developing practical strategies for prevention, early detection and de-addiction services. Stakeholders engaged in a panel discussion, exchanging insights and solutions to establish effective and sustainable measures to combat drug abuse.
The event also aimed to ensure that participant feedback would contribute to shaping policy frameworks and strengthening community-based intervention strategies to tackle drug use in Meghalaya.
