SHILLONG: The NH 44 in Jaintia Hills continue to be in a dilapidated condition even as the Jaintia Students Movement and HANM recently burnt the effigy of PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar recently as a mark of protest for not repairing the road.

Both JSM and HANM have threatened to intensify their agitations after the District Council elections if the State Government fails to repair the road.

On the other hand, the State PWD is counting on the National Highway Authority of India to repair the road since the NHAI has to take up the construction work for the up gradation of the vital road that links Meghalaya with Assam and other north eastern states.

In view of the mounting pressure, PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar had said that he would also approach the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately start the upgradation of the Highway from Jowai to Malidor.
