SPC condemns re-arrest of Assam journalist

SHILLONG, March 29: The Shillong Press Club (SPC) has condemned the arrest and subsequent re-arrest of Guwahati Press Club’s Assistant General Secretary, Dilwar Hussain Mozumder, by Assam Police, terming it a shocking abuse of the legal process.
In a strongly worded statement, the Shillong Press Club denounced Mozumder’s re-arrest immediately after being granted bail, calling it a blatant attack on press freedom and the fundamental right to free expression.
“This sequence of actions represents a direct attack on press freedom. We stand in unwavering solidarity with Mr. Mozumder and demand his immediate and unconditional release,” the statement read.
The SPC emphasised that a free press is vital in a democracy, ensuring transparency, accountability and the free flow of information.
It urged authorities to end intimidation tactics against journalists, uphold the rule of law, and protect the independence and dignity of the press.
It may be mentioned that Mozumder’s arrest has sparked widespread outrage among media organisations and journalist bodies across the region, who view it as part of a larger pattern of press intimidation.
Journalists in Assam and beyond have voiced serious concerns over the growing threats to press freedom and called for stronger protections for media professionals.
