NONGPOH, April 1: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Tuesday assured his unwavering support for the Karbi community in Meghalaya while attending the inauguration of the All Meghalaya Karbi Association’s (AMKA) three-day Golden Jubilee celebrations at Purduwa Kharpati, Ri-Bhoi.
The association, which was founded in 1975 as the Ri-Bhoi Karbi Social Welfare Association, was renamed in 1985 to reflect its broader representation of the Karbi community in the state.
Syiem, who was the chief guest for the event, hoisted the association’s flag and released a commemorative souvenir to mark the occasion.
In his address, the MLA praised the efforts of the association’s past and present leaders for their dedication to preserving the community’s welfare.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by leaders of various organisations but lauded the association’s resilience and commitment to upholding its mission over the decades.
He said the Karbi people in Meghalaya are rightful residents of the state and should never consider themselves outsiders.
He then went on to highlight their deep-rooted presence in the region and the unity they share with the larger community, both historically and in the future.
Syiem assured that, as an elected representative, he remains committed to assisting AMKA and various villages in addressing developmental needs, preserving traditions and protecting land and natural resources.
It may be mentioned that the inaugural event was attended by key AMKA leaders, including chief adviser OL Terang, adviser HS Engleng, president Robert Jone Ronghang, secretary Bistokan Timung, among others.
