SHILLONG/TURA, April 4: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has strongly condemned the continued delay in the recruitment of Lower Primary (LP) and Upper Primary (UP) teachers in Meghalaya despite multiple assurances from the state government.
As per the MPYC, thousands of Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET)-passed candidates are still awaiting recruitment, while government schools continue to face severe teacher shortages.
“On January 24 this year, education minister Rakkam Sangma assured that advertisements for teacher recruitment would be issued within one or two days. However, more than two months have passed, and no recruitment notification has been released. This inaction reflects the government’s failure to fulfill its promises and address the rising unemployment crisis in the state,” said president of the MPYC, Timjim Momin.
“Further on February 4, the Director of Education, Swapnil Tembe, confirmed that over 500 teaching positions remain vacant in government schools. Yet, the government has taken no concrete steps to fill these vacancies, affecting not just aspiring teachers but also thousands of students who are being deprived of quality education due to staff shortages” he added.
The MPYC demanded that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the Education department immediately issue the recruitment advertisement and begin the hiring process without any further delay.
“The government’s lack of urgency on this matter raises serious concerns about its commitment to the education sector and the future of Meghalaya’s youth. We stand in solidarity with the people of Meghalaya in demanding a transparent and immediate recruitment to address both unemployment and the education crisis,” asserted Timjim.
