SHILLONG, April 6: Work on the Shillong-Dawki road is expected to slow down as the monsoon season approaches.Sources have informed that during the rainy months, road-laying activities will be halted, and implementing agencies will focus solely on structural works such as the construction of drains and related infrastructure.
In certain sections of Package 1, which is part of the four-lane project, progress has already slowed due to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department’s delay in removing water supply pipes.
It was further revealed that the PHE department would need to shut down water supply to Shillong city for a couple of days in order to shift the utility pipes. However, the State Government has yet to decide when this shutdown and pipe-shifting work will be carried out.
Additionally, sources indicated that apart from the current layer of bituminous work, an additional layer of bitumen will be laid after the monsoon season.
It may be noted that the proposed construction of an overpass from Rilbong Point to the Anjalee Petrol Pump and Mahavir Park in Jhalupara has been de-scoped. The Government now plans to extend the overpass till Barik Point instead. Survey work for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new overpass alignment is currently under way.
