Demthring’s garbage pool makes a splash
While half the city was enjoying a cozy Sunday indoors with tea and Instagram stories of rain, a certain stretch of Demthring was dealing with its own version of the monsoon miracle as a surprise garbage pool that took over the road.
Thanks to a combo of heavy rain, clogged drains, and a lot of floating plastic, an entire pile of garbage decided to go on a road trip. What started as a small puddle quickly turned into a full-blown dirty swimming pool. Plastic wrappers, broken sandals, soggy cardboard boxes — everything floated proudly like a fleet of tiny trash boats.
Pedestrians found themselves hopping and tiptoeing like it was Takeshi’s Castle. Two-wheelers had to zigzag like they were avoiding banana peels in a video game. Some just turned around and took the long way home, deciding they’d rather walk an extra kilometre than risk a splash.
Sun, rain, and a Sunday wedding in the skies
Sunday’s weather in Shillong pulled off its usual drama, rain one minute, sunshine the next, and then back to a full-blown downpour. If you blinked, you probably missed the switch. Some say it’s the foxes getting married, others blame the frogs. But somewhere between Nongthymmai and Laitumkhrah, it definitely felt like something magical/ mysterious was happening in the skies.
At one point, hailstones pelted rooftops like someone had thrown a handful of pebbles from above and just about when people thought it was time to rush indoors, the sun came out, shining as if it had done nothing wrong.
Umbrellas went up, sunglasses came out, jackets were pulled off, then thrown back on again, all within a span of minutes. But then again, this is Shillong. If you don’t like the weather, just give it five minutes.
For many, it was the perfect excuse to laze around indoors. After all, what more could one want on a Sunday afternoon than unpredictable weather and a guilt-free reason to cancel plans?
