SHILLONG: The hearing of Meghahaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission to fix the electricity tariff scheduled to be held on Wednesday here is likely to be stormy one as the State Government has proposed a steep hike in power tariff.

It is learnt that the MeECL has decided to hike the fixed charge for domestic consumers from Rs 35 per KW to Rs 210 per KW, which is an increase of 500 pc.

It is expected that many people will raise their stiff opposition to the proposed power tariff which is seen as very high hike.

The critics have pointed out that while the cost of power from Umiam and Sonapani is Rs 3. 80 paise per unit, there are concerns over high power tariff proposal.

For Leshka, the proposed hike of Rs 5. 63 paise is also considered very high by the critics.

Some critics believe that the best option at the moment is to buy power from outside at a cost of Rs 3.20 paise.

Earlier, the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong had expressed stiff opposition to the recent decision of the MeECL to hike the power tariff in 2014 as it is feared that the common man would not be able to bear the brunt of the arbitrary hike in power tariff.
