SHILLONG, April 7: The Shillong Muslim Union (SMU) on Monday strongly criticized the recently enacted Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 — signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu — calling it an attempt to render Muslims “landless” and claiming it infringes upon Islamic religious principles.
SMU assistant general secretary Noor Nongrum stated that the amendment violates the fundamental rights of the Muslim community and undermines the sanctity of Waqf properties.
He particularly objected to the provision allowing the government to reclaim Waqf properties, arguing that it contradicts the very essence of Waqf.
“We must understand that Waqf is a religious institution. Once a property is designated as Waqf, it remains so permanently,” said Nongrum. “Such property is not transferable or reclaimable, as it is considered a donation to Allah.”
Nongrum also raised concerns over changes to the composition of the Waqf Board, which now allows individuals from other faiths to be appointed as members. While he acknowledged that government-appointed Muslim members—such as IAS officers and women—have long been part of the board, he emphasized that any changes to the structure of religious bodies should be applied uniformly across all faiths.
“If others can be part of the Waqf Board, then Muslims should also be allowed to participate in the management of temple, church, or monastery trusts,” he asserted.
Responding to claims that the Catholic Church supports the new law, Nongrum dismissed the reports, noting that no official statement had been issued by the Vatican.
“Any official position on the matter would need to come from Rome. While certain individuals may express support, it does not reflect the stance of the entire Catholic community,” he said.
On Sunday, the Shillong Muslim Union convened a meeting with various Muslim organisations to discuss the implications of the Waqf Amendment Bill, which was recently passed by both houses of Parliament.
