Shillong, April 8: The Meghalaya Football Team from Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School was felicitated on Tuesday for securing third place at the 2nd Indo-French Football Tournament held in Paris, France.
The felicitation ceremony took place at the main conference room of the Main Secretariat in Shillong.
Lauding the team’s remarkable achievement, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma commended the young footballers for showcasing “exceptional skill, determination, and resilience” throughout the international tournament, where they proudly represented India on foreign soil.
Sangma further stated that the state government would continue to support their football journey and nurture their potential.
He highlighted that the Rs 50 lakh investment towards the team’s travel to Paris should not be seen as mere expenditure, but as a strategic initiative to provide the youth with greater exposure and prepare them for national and international opportunities. In a significant development, the Chief Minister also announced that the Olympique Lyonnais Academy—one of Europe’s most prestigious football institutions—has invited the Meghalaya U-18 team for a 20-day training camp in June 2025. The opportunity, he said, would offer the players world-class training and invaluable international experience. Also present at the event were Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) President Hamletson Dohling, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs DD Shira, and other MFA members, who joined in celebrating the young team’s inspiring success. The felicitation served not only as a recognition of the team’s achievement but also as a testament to Meghalaya’s growing footprint in international football. With global opportunities like the Olympique Lyonnais training camp on the horizon, the state’s budding footballers are now poised to script even greater success stories in the years to come.
