SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to suspend Balkera Sangma of the 5th battalion who was arrested for allegedly supplying arms to a new militant outfit Achik Songna An Pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) in Garo Hills.

The decision to this effect was taken at a close-door meeting attended by top police and State Government officials.

Sources confirmed that the State Government has asked Meghalaya DGP PJP Haneman to dismiss Balkera Sangma from service.

The State Government has ordered an inquiry into the recent incident in which two cops were arrested for allegedly supplying arms to a new militant outfit Achik Songna An Pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK). The other cop, Hawaldar Major Rakesh D Shira who was arrested in this connection has not been suspended yet. Both the cops have been arrested by the State police. The consignment consisting magazine pouches and rifle schilling which the cops were ferrying for the militant outfit was seized from a Williamnagar-bound bus when it was being carried from Shillong.

According to sources, Balkera Sangma would also be placed under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA) for supplying arms to the militant outfit.

Meanwhile, the Commandant of the 1st Batallion Meghalaya Police has clarified that Hawaldar Major Rakesh D Shira is no longer posted in the unit.
