SHILLONG: Outgoing KHADC CEM Pynshngain N Syiem said that the Congress was not able to perform as expected in this election due to various factors including the agitations over the ILP issue.
“We were expecting to win more seats this time round but finally we were able to win only ten seats,” Syiem after being re-elected as the MDC of Mawsynram constituency said here on Thursday.
He informed that the Parliamentary Party of the Congress in the KHADC would meet anytime soon to elect on its new leader and also to discuss on the possibilities of forming the new Executive Committee (EC).
When questioned on the formation of a non-Congress by the various regional parties, he said that it would depend on the respective leadership of the various regional parties to decide with whom they would want to form the EC.
“But we are open to work with any party in the KHADC,” Syiem asserted.
When asked if he would accept to be a leader of the PP again, he said that it all depends on the party MDCs whom they want to be their new leader.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader HDR Lyngdoh denied that the ILP issue affected the performance of the party in this election.
“In fact, we have won two more seats compared to the last election. Last time we managed won only eight seats. But now we managed to win ten seats. This itself proves that the party has improved on its performance,” Lyngdoh said after being re-elected as the MDC of Sohiong constituency.
He also said that it is nothing new that the regional parties are trying to form the non-Congress EC.
“We have seen in the past that this kind of arrangement does not last. At the end, everyone wants to work with the Congress,” the senior Congress leader said.
Lyngdoh also expressed confidence that the Congress would be forming the EC despite not having the requisite numbers.
