SHILLONG: The State Government is now mulling to restart the Biometric card enrolment for the National Population Register (NPR) and the exercise will eventually lead to a compilation of the national register of Indian citizens and it would also help in identifying genuine non tribal citizens of the State.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, State Nodal Officer, NPR PW Ingty said that the Government most probably would restart the enrolment after the Lok Sabha elections gets over.
The State government was forced to put on hold the enrollment drive after the KSU had intervened and stopped the drive from being carried out justifying that the enrolment camps were being organised despite an assurance by the State Government on July 19 that the enrolment under the NPR would be undertaken in Meghalaya only after proper awareness among the people of the State.
PW Ingty said that the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills held several awareness programmes on the NPR and even held discussions with the NGOs on the matter of NPR to create an awareness on the benefits of the NPR.
It is said that the entire process of biometric enrolment drive would be subject to rigorous checking and verification, in consultation with the local institutions and the Government mulls to restart the enrolment drive from Shillong itself.
After an individual gets enrolled he is then given an Aadhar card which will provide its possessor with the universal identification, adding Aadhaar will facilitate ‘anytime, anywhere, anyhow’ authentication to its beneficiary and it will be a single source of identity verification.
It may be mentioned that Aadhaar can be used at multiple places to prove one’s identity very easily. A person’s Aadhaar number can be used while opening a bank account, booking tickets online, applying for passport, and at many other places where there is a need to give the proof of identity. Aadhaar will give migrants mobility of their identity.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that a call on the matter would be taken after the Lok Sabha elections.
Aadhaar will also help the poor people to take the benefits of the facilities provided to them by the government which could not be accessed by these people earlier.
