Shillong, April 26: The Sein Niamtre Ki Khynnah Purae (SNKKP), Shillong, on Friday expressed concern over a Shad Paskha celebration held at Cathedral Hall, Laitumkhrah, where the Malki Parish allegedly presented a plate dance of the Pnar community in an inaccurate and disrespectful manner.
“In the video clip, it was clearly seen that the dancers had used double-sided tape or glue to attach their hands to the plates. Moreover, the plates used were disposable plastic ones, which have never been part of traditional practice in the indigenous Niamtre faith,” the SNKKP said in a statement.
The organisation stated that such an incorrect portrayal misleads viewers and spreads a distorted understanding of the community’s cultural heritage.
It further expressed disappointment that a sacred traditional dance was performed within a church setting without proper permission and in a manner inconsistent with established customs.
“This notice is not meant to seek attention but to underline the importance of preserving the authenticity of our traditions,” the SNKKP clarified.
“We respectfully request that, in the future, such performances be avoided unless prior permission is obtained from the rightful cultural custodians—be it community elders, cultural bearers, or religious leaders,” it added.
The organisation concluded by expressing hope that its message would be received in the spirit of mutual respect and that such misrepresentations would not be repeated.
