Recruitment of Assistant Professors

TURA, April 26: The Achik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Education Minister Rakkam Sangma, flagging concerns over the upcoming recruitment process for Assistant Professors in government colleges across Meghalaya.
While calling for strict adherence to UGC guidelines during recruitment, the organisation also stressed the need to appoint candidates who not only meet the basic eligibility criteria but are genuinely passionate about teaching.
Recruitment for the vacant positions will be carried out through the Meghalaya Education Recruitment Board (MERB).
“We strongly urge the government to ensure the strict and uncompromising adherence to the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges and measures for the maintenance of standards in higher education, 2018. These regulations set the baseline standard necessary to maintain quality and competence in our institutions of higher learning,” said the association.
Emphasising that recruitment should go beyond mere regulatory compliance, it said.
“We are concerned about the possibility of appointing individuals who may meet the minimum requirements on paper but lack the genuine passion, dedication and aptitude for teaching and research. We don’t want teachers by chance, seeking employment merely for survival but dedicated educators,” the organisation said.
It urged MERB to implement a selection process that rigorously assesses not only eligibility but also the candidate’s intrinsic motivation, teaching philosophy, potential for continuous learning, and commitment to academic excellence.
“We emphasise the critical need to appoint only sincere, dedicated individuals who demonstrate a palpable passion for teaching and research, and who are committed to continuous professional development. These are the educators who will truly contribute to building a vibrant academic environment in our government colleges,” they said, asking the government to prioritise quality, passion and dedication in the forthcoming recruitment drive for Assistant Professors.
