SHILLONG, April 29: Be it flyovers, road projects, or buildings, infrastructure works are often completed faster in other states compared to Meghalaya. This is because projects face several hurdles that make meeting deadlines quite challenging.
An expert in the construction field pointed out that Meghalaya has a limited working season because of its prolonged monsoon period, which significantly hampers project timelines.
It has been observed that workers in other states operate round-the-clock, while in Meghalaya, this is rarely the case due to logistical and environmental constraints.
Additionally, local villagers often restrict construction work beyond 6 pm.
Companies are also prohibited from using heavy machinery at night due to the excessive noise it generates. Another reason cited is that bituminous materials do not perform well in colder temperatures, which is a common condition in Meghalaya, especially at night.
Experts further noted that the hilly terrain of the state makes night work risky, increasing the chances of accidents.
However, there are exceptions. Some projects under the NHIDCL are being executed in two shifts to expedite completion.
It is worth mentioning that in other states, infrastructure projects are often completed faster because workers operate in three shifts and construction continues 24 hours a day.
