NONGPOH, May 4: Police have warned petrol pump operators against selling fuel in jerry cans and bottles, cautioning that such practices could facilitate illegal resale and aid anti-social elements in criminal activities.
The warning comes after a team from Nongpoh Police Station, along with the Secretary Shnong and the Village Defence Party (VDP), conducted a search operation on Saturday at a shop in Quinine, Ri-Bhoi.
The shop, owned by Omiwell Marbaniang, son of (L) Ram Kumar Rai of Shangbangla, was found illegally storing approximately 101 litres of petrol and 84 litres of diesel.
Authorities revealed that the fuel was allegedly being sold to the public at inflated rates.
Whilst the shopkeeper claimed he had sourced the fuel from nearby petrol pumps, police suspect that it may have been stolen, possibly from mobile towers and other installations.
Police have also informed that selling petrol or diesel without the necessary authorisation is a punishable offence.
Meanwhile, legal action has been initiated against the accused.
