SHILLONG, May 9: Former Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday cast aspersions on the Union Ministry of Education for its “continued silence and inaction” regarding the protracted administrative crisis at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), calling the apathy “irresponsible” and detrimental to students’ futures.
“Frankly, the Union Ministry has not done anything till today. They just left it like that, let the stalemate continue. This is totally irresponsible, especially with the NEP launch that all the institutions should be the centre of excellence,” observed Rymbui, criticising the Ministry for failing to move beyond symbolic gestures and take meaningful steps to end the impasse.
It is pertinent to note that the Union Education Ministry had earlier constituted a three-member committee to look into the grievances of students and faculty, but beyond the formation of the panel, little has materialised.
The absence of follow-up action has deepened the uncertainty, with students caught in the crossfire of an unresolved administrative crisis.
“With such administration and such apathy of the Ministry, do you think NEHU will become a centre of excellence? I totally disagree and request the Ministry, better late than never. Let better sense prevail, let us resolve the stalemate as soon as possible for the benefit of the students,” Rymbui said.
