SHILLONG: UDP has decided to take action against its newly-elected MDC Laski Rymbai for leaving the party and subsequently aligning with Congress.

Informing this here Thursday, the party working president Bindo Lanong said, “Since the MDC violated the ‘contract’ of the party, action would be taken against him.”

It was on March 4 that Rymbai, who was elected from Tuber district council constituency sent his resignation letter to the party.

Rymbai had conveyed to the party leadership that he quit UDP as per the wish of his supporters.

Prior to the district council polls, to prevent its MDCs ) from defecting to other parties, UDP had inked a deed of agreement with all its candidates under the Indian Contract Act, 1872. The agreement binds the candidates to remain with the party for the next five years.

The UDP resorted to signing the contract by the candidates in the absence of an anti-defection law in the councils.

The Chairpersons of KHADC and JHADC were made witnesses to the deed of agreement so that they can suspend UDP MDCs who align with other political parties.

The Chairpersons can be sued if they do not take action against the party MDCs on the basis of the petitions of UDP.
