SHILLONG, May 15: The ongoing affiliation row between the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and the Captain Williamson Sangma State University has been resolved, with the state government stating that colleges wanting to affiliate with the state university must sever ties with NEHU first.
Education Minister Rakkam Sangma on Thursday stated that the due process has to be followed since the NEHU Act states that colleges must de-affiliate with NEHU first before affiliating with any other state university.
During a meeting between state government and NEHU officials, it was decided that colleges can de-affiliate with NEHU and affiliate with the new university for the first semester, allowing them to complete their full semester from NEHU until the course completion.
The controversy erupted after the Education Minister claimed that as many as 22 colleges in the state are keen to affiliate with the state-owned university.
On Thursday, the government appointed 37 professors on a six-month contractual basis for the state university.
Sangma handed over the appointment letters during a programme held at DERT in Malki.
He described the appointees as a mix of experienced and young minds, stating that the university will now have both experienced and young faculty members.
