Shillong, May 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the “Indigenous Cultural Centre of Seng Khasi Kmie” in Mawkhar, with the government sanctioning Rs 15.37 crore for the construction.
The centre is designed around the theme “Modernity with Roots”, a concept developed by its principal design architect, Prabhat D Sawyan. The architectural plan seeks to blend tradition with contemporary elements, reflecting the vision of preserving cultural heritage while embracing progress.
The centre will be developed on two newly-acquired plots of land, with the aim of upholding the sacred connection between the past, present, and future.
The historic two-storied hall with its iconic facade facing Mawkhar’s main road will be preserved in its original form.
The new facility will house a variety of state-of-the-art features, including a learning and resource centre with a digital library offering an extensive collection of rare Khasi literature.
It will also feature an audio-visual museum, allowing visitors to virtually experience indigenous festivals and ceremonies.
Other key components of the centre will include galleries and exhibition halls showcasing indigenous crafts, traditional attire, musical instruments, and ceremonial objects from across Meghalaya.
The centre will serve as a cultural hub, welcoming visitors from within the state, across the country, and abroad to explore and engage with the rich heritage of the Khasi people.
The chief minister expressed his happiness in launching the project, reminiscing that the Seng Khasi Kmie had first proposed the idea two years ago and said it was a proud moment to finally lay its foundation stone.
He assured continued government support to transform the centre into one of the state’s most dynamic cultural institutions.
