SHILLONG, May 16: The state government filed a report to the High Court of Meghalaya, indicating that no overloaded truck was found to pass through 24 weighbridges across the state during its inquiry. The Division Bench of Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji and Justice W. Diengdoh noted the May 8 report following a public interest litigation filed by social worker Tenny Dard M. Marak.
The PIL sought to draw the court’s attention to alleged misconduct of government officials in operating 28 weighbridges across the state. According to the complaint, overloaded goods-carrying vehicles are allowed to pass without proper weighing, causing a loss of revenue to the state.
In an earlier order, the court directed the respondent state to carry out an extensive inquiry into the matter by inspecting the weighbridges in the presence of the petitioner.
The advocate appearing for the state filed a report indicating the action taken.
According to the report, the exercise was carried out in 24 weighbridges. No overloaded truck was found to have passed through any of these.
A copy of the report was furnished to P. Agarwal, the advocate for the petitioner, who disputed its content and wanted to file a rejoinder.
Stating that the rejoinder should be filed by June 6, the HC set June 13 as the next date of hearing.
