188 rape cases in 2014
SHILLONG: Recurrent crimes against women and challenges faced by women of Meghalaya were highlighted in the observation of International Women’s Day at a function held at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Inspector General of Police (CID) R Rana called upon the citizens of the society to take initiatives for finding out the causes of these crimes and solve these problems collectively.
He further informed that the most committed crimes of the area are rape cases and about 188 rape cases have been registered in the year 2014. He said that Rs. 50,0001- were paid as compensation for rape cases and Rs.25,0001- for molestation cases.
He also felt the need for deploying more women police in all police stations so that they can give immediate help to the victimized persons before they get proper counseling.
In his introductory speech, H M Shangpliang, Director of Social Welfare informed that Inspiring Change is the 2014 theme of Women’s Day and encourages advocacy for women’s advancement everywhere in every way.
It calls for challenging the status quo for women’s equality and vigilance inspiring positive change, he added.
Meghalaya Additional Chief Secretary and i/c Chief Secretary, P B 0 Warjri was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
While addressing the gathering, Warjri said that unlike the rest of the country women of Meghalaya enjoy the special position but at the same time they have to take a major responsibility while it comes to family matters.
He also stressed for the need for good counseling and forensic science institution for providing best evidence for presenting in the court for fair judgement of the cases.
