SHILLONG, May 26: Police are coordinating with their counterparts in Assam and Nagaland in connection with the recent burglary at a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM kiosk in Mawkriah, East Khasi Hills. Thieves broke into the kiosk and stole approximately Rs 28.13 lakh after cutting open the machine.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem said the state police are working closely with their counterparts in Assam and Nagaland, as similar thefts involving the same modus operandi have been reported in those states.
Syiem emphasised the need for greater coordination, noting that the crime appears to have been carried out by a professional inter-state gang. Preliminary investigations suggest that the burglars used an oxy-gas cylinder to cut open the ATM and completed the operation in just around eight minutes.
It is worth mentioning that CCTV footage shows four individuals involved in the theft. A case has been registered at Mawngap Police Station, and the investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the culprits.
