SHILLONG: Opposition Leader Dr Donkupar Roy (UDP) has demanded an increase in the monthly remuneration of Anganwadi workers while pointing out that many states are giving higher honorarium to the workers.

During the Question Hour in the Assembly on Monday, Roy indicated that states like Pondicherry, Goa and Tamil Nadu provide Rs 10,000 to Anganwadi workers as honorarium, while Andhra Pradesh gives Rs 4,200.

According to Roy, the honorarium paid to the Anganwadi workers in the State is the lowest in the country.

In reply, the Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak said that she will have to study the honorarium given to Anganwadi workers of other states before giving any assurance.

She said that while in the Main Anganwadi Centre, a non matriculate gets Rs 2938 per month, a non- matriculate with five years honorary work is given Rs 2969.

The non matriculate with a 10-year experience in honorary work is allotted Rs 3,000. While a matriculate gets Rs 3000, a matriculate with five years honorary work gets Rs 3031.

The remuneration being paid for matriculate with 10 years honorary work is Rs 3063.

In the mini Anganwadi centre, the honorarium paid to the Anganwadi worker is Rs 2250 per month.
