Education scam

SHILLONG: Opposition leader Dr Donkupar Roy has demanded that people responsible for the infamous education scam should be brought to book.

“It is really sad no action has been taken against those people who are involved in this scam despite the admission of the Education department about the discrepancies in the whole recruitment process. The department had even issued an order to terminate the service of the 246 teachers,” Dr Roy who is also the UDP legislator said while participating in the discussion on the address of the Governor on the second day of the Budget session of the assembly on Monday.

He said that the concerned minister should have been immediately dropped or resigned since it was under her directive there was tampering of the scoresheet by application of the ‘white fluid’.

“The claim of the Government to bring about transparency and accountability cannot be achieved if people who are involved in the scam go scot free,” Opposition Leader said.

While pointing out that the media in their news reports had termed the teachers who were terminated as tainted, Dr Roy felt people who were responsible for their appointment are more tainted.

“It is really a matter of concern that this kind of illegal things have happened in the Education department,” Opposition leader said.

The Opposition leader urged the State Government not to give contradicting figures in relation to the Plan size which is fixed for the next fiscal year.

As per the figures in the Planning department of the State, he said that the Plan size has been fixed at Rs 4,290 crore.

“But in the Governor’s Address, the plan size has been fixed at Rs 4545 crore,” Dr Roy said.
