BERLIN, May 28: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday as Ukraine seeks further military support amid a recent escalation in Russia’s bombing campaign, despite US-led efforts to end the war.
Germany has been the second-biggest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States.
Merz said on Monday that Germany and other major allies are no longer imposing any range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine as it fights to repel Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Since taking office three weeks ago, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has launched diplomatic efforts to secure a Ukraine ceasefire and maintain Western support.
Meanwhile, fighting persists along the 1,000-km front line.
Russia launched its largest drone attack of the war, with 296 Ukrainian drones intercepted across 13 regions.
Moscow’s air defences downed dozens, causing minor damage.
Ukraine reported overnight attacks involving missiles and 88 drones; 34 were shot down, 37 jammed.
Strikes targeted rail infrastructure in Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy, briefly halting services and causing minor damage.
No casualties were reported. Air traffic in Moscow was heavily disrupted. (AP)
